Decorative Walkway Lifted to Improve Drainage & Protect the Foundation

Projects

Restoring Function and Appearance Without Concrete Replacement

Over time, this decorative stamped concrete walkway had gradually settled along the home’s foundation, creating improper drainage that allowed water to collect and drain toward the house.

Beyond the drainage concern, the settled walkway had begun to negatively impact the appearance of the property and raised concerns about long-term foundation moisture issues.

Rather than replacing the walkway entirely, Duranova restored the existing concrete with a targeted lifting solution that improved drainage, functionality, and curb appeal—while saving the homeowner thousands.

Project Snapshot

  • Location: Minnesota Residential Property
  • Property Type: Single-Family Home
  • Surface: Decorative stamped concrete side walkway
  • Problem: Settlement causing water drainage toward foundation
  • Solution: Polyurethane concrete lifting + joint sealing
  • Additional Services: Caulking/sealing along foundation joint
  • Timeline: Same-day repair
  • Customer Savings vs Replacement: Approximately $2,000
  • Downtime: Minimal

The Problem

This decorative side walkway had gradually settled over time, causing the concrete to pitch back toward the home instead of directing water away from the structure.

That created several concerns:

  • Water draining directly against the home’s foundation
  • Increased risk of moisture intrusion over time
  • Poor drainage performance during rain events
  • Diminished curb appeal from visibly settled concrete
  • Potential long-term structural concerns if left unaddressed

Because this walkway sat directly alongside the home, proper drainage was especially important.

Replacing the entire stamped walkway would have been expensive, disruptive, and difficult to match aesthetically.

Why Replacement Wasn’t the Best Option

Stamped decorative concrete can be particularly costly to replace because matching existing patterns, finishes, and color tones is often difficult and expensive.

Full replacement would have involved:

  • Demolition and removal of existing decorative concrete
  • Hauling and disposal costs
  • New forming and repouring
  • Challenges matching the existing stamped finish
  • Multiple days of disruption
  • Significantly higher overall cost

Because the concrete itself remained structurally sound, lifting and restoring the existing slabs was the smarter solution.

Our Solution

Duranova strategically lifted the settled stamped decorative walkway slabs to restore proper drainage away from the home.

By carefully adjusting slab elevation, we were able to improve the slope and redirect water flow away from the foundation where it belonged.

To further improve performance and appearance, we also sealed the joint between the walkway and the home with professional-grade caulking.

This provided:

  • Improved drainage away from the foundation
  • Better protection against water intrusion
  • Cleaner finished appearance
  • Enhanced long-term functionality

This approach preserved the decorative concrete while solving the underlying drainage issue.

Our Repair Process

Site Evaluation

We assessed slab settlement, drainage direction, elevation changes, and overall slab condition.

Because the stamped decorative concrete remained intact and structurally sound, replacement was unnecessary.

Precision Polyurethane Lifting

Small injection holes were strategically drilled in the settled walkway sections.

Specialized expanding polyurethane foam was then injected beneath the slabs to:

  • Fill underlying voids
  • Stabilize supporting soils
  • Lift the decorative concrete in carefully controlled increments
  • Restore proper drainage slope

Joint Sealing

After lifting, we sealed the joint between the concrete and the home to help reduce water infiltration and create a cleaner finished appearance.

Patch & Cleanup

Injection points were patched and the work area cleaned upon completion.

Results

This repair successfully:

  • Restored proper drainage away from the home
  • Reduced water exposure against the foundation
  • Improved long-term functionality of the walkway
  • Preserved the existing decorative stamped concrete
  • Enhanced overall curb appeal
  • Avoided costly decorative concrete replacement
  • Saved the homeowner approximately $2,000
  • Completed the repair in just hours instead of days

Before & After

Before, the settled walkway allowed water to drain toward the home—creating a potential long-term foundation concern while detracting from the appearance of the property.

After Duranova’s repair, the decorative walkway was restored to proper function with improved drainage, a cleaner appearance, and better long-term protection for the home.

Protect Your Foundation Without Replacing Your Concrete

Settled sidewalks, walkways, patios, and decorative concrete surfaces often can be restored without expensive replacement. If water is draining toward your home, warehouse, garage, or building foundation, correcting slab settlement early can help prevent bigger problems later.
